Quotable quote

"....As Gush-Up concentrates wealth on to the tip of a shining pin on which our billionaires pirouette, tidal waves of money crash through the institutions of democracy - the courts, the Parliament as well as the media, seriously compromising their ability to function in the ways they are meant to. The noisier the carnival around elections, the less sure we are that democracy really exists.

Each new corruption scandal that surfaces in India makes the last one look tame. In the summer of 2011 the 2G spectrum scandal broke. We learnt that corporations had siphoned away $40 billion of public money by installing a friendly soul as the Minister of Communications and Information who grossly underpriced the licences for 2G telecom spectrum and illegally auctioned it to his buddies. The taped telephone conversations leaked to the press showed how a network of industrialists and their front companies, ministers, senior journalists and a TV anchor were involved in facilitating this daylight robbery. The tapes were just an MRI that confirmed a diagnosis that people had made long ago.

The privatization and illegal sale of telecom spectrum does not involve war, displacement and ecological devastation. The privatization of India's mountains, rivers and forests does. Perhaps because it does not have the uncomplicated clarity of a straightforward, out-and-out accounting scandal, or perhaps because it is all being done in the name of India's 'progress', it does not have the same resonance with the middle classes.

In 2005 the state governments of Chhattisgarh, Orissa and Jharkhand signed hundreds of memorandums of understanding (MoUs) with a number of private corporations, turning over trillions of dollars of bauxite, iron ore and other minerals for a pittance, defying even the warped logic of the Free Market. (Royalties to the government ranged between 0.5 per cent and 7 per cent.)

Only days after the Chhattisgarh government signed an MoU for the construction of an integrated steel plant in Bastar with Tata Steel, the Salwa Judum, a vigilante militia, was inaugurated. The government said it was a spontaneous uprising of local people who were fed up with the 'repression' by Maoist guerrillas in the forest. It turned out to be a ground-clearing operation, funded and armed by the government and subsidized by mining corporations. In the other states similar militias were created, with other names. The prime minister announced the Maoists were the 'single largest security challenge in India'. It was a declaration of war.

On the 2nd of January 2006, in Kalinganagar, in the neighbouring state of Orissa, perhaps to signal the seriousness of the government's intention, ten platoons of police arrived at the site of another Tata Steel plant and opened fire on villagers who had gathered there to protest what they felt was inadequate compensation for their land. Thirteen people including one policeman were killed and thirty-seven injured. Six years have gone by and though the villages remain under siege by armed policemen the protest has not died. Meanwhile in Chhattisgarh, the Salwa Judum burned, raped and murdered its way through hundreds of forest villages, evacuating 600 villages and forcing 50,000 people to come out into police camps and 300,000 people to flee. The chief minister announced that those who did not come out of the forests would be considered 'Maoist terrorists'. In this way, in parts of modern India, ploughing fields and sowing seed came to be defined as terrorist activity. Eventually the Salwa Judum's atrocities only succeeded in strengthening the resistance and swelling the ranks of the Maoist guerrilla army. In 2009 the government announced what it called Operation Green Hunt. Some 200,000 paramilitary troops were deployed across Chhattisgarh, Orissa, Jharkhand and West Bengal.

After three years of 'low-intensity conflict' that has not managed to 'flush' the rebels out of the forest, the Central government has declared that it will deploy the Indian Army and Air Force. In India we don't call this war. We call it 'Creating a Good investment Climate'. Thousands of soldiers have already moved in. A brigade headquarters and airbases are being readied. One of the biggest armies in the world is now preparing its Terms of Engagement to 'defend' itself against the poorest, hungriest, most malnourished people in the world. We only await the declaration of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), which will give the army legal impunity and the right to kill 'on suspicion'. Going by the tens of thousands of unmarked graves and anonymous cremation pyres in Kashmir, Manipur and Nagaland, it has shown itself to be a very suspicious army indeed.

While the preparations for deployment are being made, the jungles of Central India continue to remain under siege, with villagers frightened to come out, or go to the market for food or medicine. Hundreds of people have been jailed, charged for being Maoists under draconian, undemocratic laws. Prisons are crowded with Adivasi people, many of who have no idea what their crime is. Recently, Soni Sori, an Adivasi school teacher from Bastar, was arrested and tortured in police custody. Stones were pushed up her vagina to get her to 'confess' that she was a Maoist courier. The stones were removed from her body at a hospital in Calcutta, where, after a public outcry, she was sent for a medical check-up. At a recent Supreme Court hearing, activists presented the judges with the stones in a plastic bag. The only outcome of their efforts has been that Soni Sori remains in jail while Ankit Garg, the superintendent of police who conducted the interrogation, was conferred with President's Police Medal for Gallantry on Republic Day...."

LIFE IN PICTURES: "Belissimo" for, erm, men?

Ironically, "belissimo" (ending with an "O") is a Portuguese word for "very beautiful" in the masculine sense. But Poise Perfumes shop in Maldives' capital island Male' sells this perfume and its related deo body spray which state they are a women's perfume and a women's deo body spray although the feminine version of the word is "belissima" (ending with an "A").

I first came to know about this perfume from a female relative. It was so pleasant I bought it immediately. It's very cheap actually. The perfume is priced at MVR 220. Not those perfumes which can skyrocket at prices above MVR 1,000 like Sculpture. I bought this package with the deo body spray for MVR 230. The additional MVR 10 was for the deo body spray, I guess. A cheap body spray then.

I don't understand why perfumes are gendered - man, woman, or uni-sex. Whose to say what is a male scent or a female scent or a genderless scent or a non-binary scent or even a transgender scent. For me a perfume is a perfume and a nice smell is a nice smell. Let's keep life simple, shall we?

But hold it right there: a friend says there's a reason why scents are gendered; she says a woman should wear a woman's scent because it's designed to attract men. Golly, I shouldn't wear women's scent then because it will attract men to me! Ugh!! Just kidding.

Anyway, I use perfumes that smell pleasant to me because I want a pleasant smell around me all the time - regardless of the perfume's gender, hahaha! I don't wear perfume to attract potential mates of either gender or no gender at all!! That's why I started using this Belissimo perfume for women and I was surprised that some of my male friends (from both Maldives and Sri Lanka) asked me the name of this perfume and they too started using this perfume!!!

"This business of NGOs is a very interesting one in India. I'm no great fan of NGOs. Many of them are funded by various western agencies. They end up functioning like the whistle on a pressure cooker. They divert and sublimate political rage and make sure that it does not build to a head. Eventually it disempowers people."

Maldives’ children of Bangladesh’s Alamgir's blackmail victims bullied and physically harassed in public

(Translation of an article written in Maldives' mother tongue Dhivehi by Ibrahim Saeed, dated 3 March 2024 from Bonthi News, Maldives, at the link: https://bonthinews.com/26997)

It's been 2 years since the emergence of the case of Bangladesh citizen MD Alamgir who had engaged in same-sex relations with a lot of Maldivian men.

From among the 250 men involved, only 10 people's cases emerged into the public. And out of that also, only three people were sentenced on trial. That was based on confessions. The other 6 people were dealt with an "advice counsel" by the State. They escaped without a prison sentence. One case is now pending in the trail stage.

In these cases, there were major problems to do with the chain of custody in regard to how the video evidence came into the possession of police. These cases are proceeding as an atrocity to bring about an end to the political careers of certain people.

The investigation started as an issue of blackmailing and kidnapping. However, the issue ended with two or three (been convicted) in the manner of a lamb being led to the slaughter.  Or the issue was deliberately buried. Those who blackmailed, extorted millions of Rufiya (Maldivian currency), produced pornography, and distributed them got away scot-free.

Alamgir who was arrested has now received the punishment available in Maldives resulting in his "redemption". And he had apologized for causing the tearing of the social fabric of Maldives. That's true. He is still going through his jail sentence. Today those who are using his actions to get rid of our social fabric are activists on social media. During all elections, the photo of the room where the atrocity was committed, scenes from the videos, and the distribution of posts about Alamgir are carried out just by Maldivians. Intelligent educated people. Treating it as fun.

This is resulting in two issues. One is that this is causing same-sex activities to be advertised as an ordinary normal activity. When this issue is projected to the extent that people feel this is not a big thing, as being spread on the pages of major political parties through the use of photographs and memes, it will soon result in this issue been regarded as not a major problem. Even now it's treated as a trivial matter. This is tragic.

The second issue is that each such post is reaching the children of the victims, sent to the children by their classmates and friends, who are spreading these posts around.

According to information received to "Bonthi", children of the victims even now are been bullied at their schools. Some of the children have been sexually harassed on the street. They say that even to date they have not received any assistance even when they brought these happenings to the attention of the police and the gender ministry. Some of these children have attempted suicide due to been unable to bear the amount of bullying at their schools. And some children have changed schools. And some families have migrated out of Maldives.

A psychiatrist (whose name has been withheld to ensure the safety of the child victim) psychologically treating a child who have been bullied, with regard to this case, said that the child in question faced depression due to bullying by classmates and the child had twice attempted to commit suicide.

"It takes a lot of effort to calm down these children. And just when the child has calmed down, (people) start distributing on social media, on some excuse, the photos, and videos, and memes of this case. Maldivians do need to become civilized. This is a more dangerous activity that must not be indulged in just to score political points. Even if the adults involved in this case can persevere, this is related to scores of children who are innocent," the psychiatrist said.

It is notable that police, the prosecutor general, the gender ministry, and the education ministry did not address the social damage of such a serious issue.

A person who became a victim said that even if the trial and the case are prolonged, with an offer of a plea bargain deal, the said person is completing the procedures for the sake of the said person's children, and that there is no further suffering or loss from this case.

"What my children faced or are facing I have referred to the gender ministry and police some three to four times. For two years my family has been dragged into a case where the penalty is a 3-month jail conviction. Yet the trial has still not ended. The last hearing was held seven months ago. Then gangsters from gangs are approaching me claiming that they will expedite the trial if I offer them money. Some of them claim that they are approaching me on behalf of the judge. I don't know what's the truth behind this. Some approach me claiming that they are acting on behalf of the PG and that they will expedite my case. Everybody wants money. Police did not look into my case when I approached them. I brought the matter to the attention of judges of the Supreme Court. Nothing happened. On the other hand nowhere in the world will they not look into a kidnapping and blackmail case than this case," the person elaborated.

The person went on to say that offenders and their corelated victims’ circumstances are emerging a lot nowadays.

"Police is not investigating any of this. They arrest people who steal a bag of mangoes. But these are more serious crimes, right? Due to the way Alamgir's case ended up, people don't dare to refer to the police the cases involving muggings nowadays. On the other hand if any such incriminatory material gets 'leaked', one becomes a victim of social media bullying for the rest of one's life. In this nation, victims are considered the offenders," the person said.

It is now an out-of-bounds common occurrence where various platforms of social media are used to kidnap and mug people. Using Telegram and WhatsApp or other dating apps, people are lured to guesthouses and empty apartments where they are stripped naked, videoed, and threatened to expose them by way of blackmailing, holding knives to the victims' neck, coercing them to open the Bank of Maldives app, and extorting substantial sums of money.

Forbidden notebooks: A woman’s right to write

Forbidden evokes, to my English-speaking ear, the biblical fruit whose consumption leads to shame and expulsion from Paradise. Eve’s story is not irrelevant to a novel like Alba de Céspedes’s Forbidden Notebook, in which a woman succumbs to a temptation: to record her thoughts and observations. Valeria Cossati’s impulse to keep a diary leads not so much to the knowledge of good and evil as it does to the self-knowledge advocated by Socrates and serving as a cornerstone of philosophical inquiry ever since. In Valeria’s case, it also leads to solitude, alienation, guilt, and painful lucidity. READ MORE FROM THE PARIS REVIEW
